How will AI impact Recruiting?

I asked ChatGPT how AI will impact recruiting, and I’ll be honest - I was impressed with their answer.

Technically, they were spot on. I can imagine many leaders reading their response and thinking, “Great, this will save me time and money!” (Full transcript with my human considerations here.)

As I re-read their answer, I started noticing one important piece that was missing - nuance. There are nuances to humans, and specifically the art of hiring sticky employees for impressive yet thinly-stretched leaders, that can’t be distilled down to an algorithm.

The more we learn about AI, the more we will understand the limitations of the technology, which will undoubtedly include the ability to understand and communicate with human nuance. I consider myself a fairly early adopter of technology (don’t come for me, actual early adopters!), and I want to be on the forefront of using new helpful technology for good.

This is a moment to deploy the two most important words in improv:

"Yes, and…"

  • Should we have AI review resumes at our company? Yes, and… this assumes you’ve already done the work to (1) invest in your employer brand so the talent you want applies and (2) your leadership team has a clear understanding of non-starters that could be found consistently on resumes.

  • Should we have AI schedule interviews at our company? Yes, and… you should build a personal relationship with your candidates throughout their process to get a deeper understanding of their motivations. Developing a human connection and selling the opportunity are important parts of an interview process. Top talent is sought after, and you shouldn’t assume they’ll accept your offer.

  • Should we use AI for performance management? Yes, and… you should build a performance management system that allows space for normal human fluctuation in engagement & performance at work.

Books will be written about how we, as a collective workforce, integrated AI into our decision making during this time. I hope they write about all of the ways we used AI to bring the future in faster - minimizing unconscious bias, improving candidate experience, and using predictive data to improve hiring decisions. We have an opportunity to evolve & enhance the human element of this very human business transaction with the integration of AI.

Here’s a few examples of my conversation with ChatGPT, with my professional recruiting experience & human considerations noted alongside.

Over hundreds of one-on-one conversations as an HRBP, I’ve built a deep appreciation for the importance of nuance and real human connection. Here’s a visual I built to help our clients think through the ways they can integrate AI into their recruiting process while keeping the human at the center.
