Why is it so hard to hire right now?
Leaders are telling us hiring is their biggest challenge. Candidates are telling us they’ve applied to 75 jobs & not heard back. We look at nationwide job openings across Linkedin & Indeed daily - and we have some observations.
➡️ Last month, the US added 150,000 jobs.
➡️ Jobs are staying open longer & new jobs are being added daily.
➡️ More remote work means some opportunities no longer have location constraints. Talent (in certain roles) has options outside of their local market.
There’s plenty of good that has come from these changes - those who can work remotely get more time with family & commutes are limited.
So why is it so hard to hire right now?
Leaders are tired.
➡️ (Read: doing more with less; surviving yet another year managing shifting priorities in a wait & see economy)
Candidates are tired.
➡️ (Read: feeling dispensable; have been ghosted & ghosted &…)
Recruiting teams are understaffed, if existent.
➡️ (Read: there might not even be anyone to ghost you; it’s now common for 1-2 Recruiters to support an entire company (!!))
So what can we do?
The job market is more transactional than ever. The “little things'' that are actually the human things have taken a backseat. Human-centric candidate experience & strategic hiring processes are no longer the norm.
It’s the end of the year, we’re tired too, and it feels simpler to let the next 8 weeks play out & stomach the productivity loss.
Or, you could use this time to show your team that the wellbeing of your employees matters to you, as much as profitability & company mission.
Below are some ways we’re encouraging our clients to invest in their talent & differentiate themselves as human-centric employers in their various industries this season.
Help others, together
(Coordinate a food drive or volunteer together)
Build real human connections
(Executive/top performer lunches, write hand written cards to remote employees)
Structure & plan for time off
(Plan & coordinate so everyone can come back feeling like they got some (dare I say… freaking) rest)
